Heroes who save lives

Kabiti Ishaya( in the picture) of Nigeria is not afraid to talk about her HIV-positive condition and her name is on top of the Heroes list of Times current edition with the cover package" Saving one life at a time." Kabiti was raped by an uncle and at the age of 24 tested positive for HIV. All hell broke loose when she went public with the news. She is ostracized and is an outcast in her own village by her own people. Undaunted she is determined to help others. She has formed "Hope For The Living" organization, a volunteer group that goes out to schools talking about HIV-Aids. Inspite of her own plight, she has opened up her home for the sick and dying giving them unselfishly what little she has.

Bravo Kabiti. Your work inspires many but there are many lessons to be learnt. Society needs to be educated to avoid the pitfalls of turning against their own kind, when they need love, understanding and care. The world has got to step up to its collective responsibilty to provide the financial means for those in need of drugs and treatmnet. People affected by HIV-Aids deserve the dignity of humanity.
