John Sidney McCain III (born August 29, 1936, Panama Canal Zone, Panama) is an American politician of the Republican Party. McCain has been a U.S. Senator from Arizona since 1987, winning re-election in 1992, 1998, and 2004. He was a presidential candidate in the 2000 election, but was defeated in the Republican primaries by then-Texas Governor and now President George W. Bush. McCain's initiatives in the Senate include campaign finance reform, immigration reform, and concerns about the detention of extrajudicial prisoners.
Prior to entering politics, McCain was a Captain in the United States Navy and a prisoner of war in Vietnam from 1967 to 1973. He was honorably discharged upon his retirement from the Navy in 1981.
Senator McCain is a true American hero.
Even if you disagree with his political ideology, he deserves respect.
